History was offered as a subject from the very inception of the college in the year 1948. Until 1956, it was taught under Part III at the intermediate level. Pre-University course was introduced in which History was offered under Part III since 1956. The year 1971 is a Milestone in the History of Nirmala College, as History was offered as the main subject at the Under-Graduate level. From the year 1980, it became a full-fledged Post Graduate department. In the year 2006, the department had attained the status of PG and Research Department of History with M. Phil and Ph. D. The Department has the pride of organizing the 9th Annual Session of the Tamil History Congress in the year 2002. In 2019, the Department proudly unveiled the logo for our department emphasizing “Explore the Past to Lead the Future” .

The Post Graduate student’s syllabi updated to make them fit in for Competitive Examinations. The Department offers a platform for the students to excel in all round skill development by celebrating Unique Days, Various literary and cultural Competitions, News and Career Corner. The Department has the privilege of introducing the Department Magazine ‘Historia’ and a debating society ‘Historica Society’ where the students contribute their literary and oratorical Skills.
