DBT Star College Scheme
Overview
The DBT Star College Scheme was initiated for strengthening Life Sciences and Biotechnology education and training at the undergraduate level. The financial support by DBT, Government of India ensures that there is a substantial increase in the proportion of hands on experimental work by students, increased access to laboratory and bioinformatics infrastructure, life science related journals, summer school training. The scheme also includes training of faculty and organization of a number of skill development programs.
The Department of Botany, Chemistry and Zoology were brought under the banner of the Star College Scheme in 2012. In the year 2015, they were placed under the Continued Status of the scheme. In 2017 they were upgraded to the Star Status and were awarded a handsome grant for sustaining activities, laboratory resources and enhancement.
Additional departments were included in the year 2017 - Department of Mathematics, Geography and Computer Science. These departments were granted Continued Status in 2020.

There are two schemes under the Star College Scheme of DBT

Scheme 2012 has received an amount of Rs 1.28 crores for infrastructure resources development, academic activities, contingency and Mentoring and monitoring. Scheme 2017 has received an amount of Rs 43.00 lakhs.
Increased laboratory resources and practical techniques on an individualized basis have attracted more number of students for PG programmes and subsequent research.
Sustained Field visits/Industrial visits/ Hands on training/ Workshops/Guest lectures have kept the students well exposed to real time happenings and motivated them to progress further.
Number of students taking up National/State level competitive exams has increased.
Provision of Recurring amount has helped the departments to sustain all the activities in a dynamic manner.
Group projects have held the scientific temper of young minds. Opportunity to present and publish their papers at the UG level has been created
Extensive community and extension activities from lab to land has been executed and schools have been invited to the campus. Guest lectures. Demonstration of experiments and tour of the campus has been organized.
Books purchased under DBT have provided learning materials for reference and research.
