AIM

  • The department intends to provide comprehensive and intensive knowledge of the field of English literary studies. Exposure to a multiplicity of cultures and different varieties of genres enables to explore the multifaceted dimensions of English Language and Literature.

VISION

  • To instill in the young minds of the students an awareness of their self identity and nurture a thirst as well as a thrust for the glorious fulfillment of their womanhood for the betterment of Cosmic Growth and Global Unity.

OBJECTIVES

  • To provide students with an in-depth knowledge of English Language and Literature
  • To develop and encourage their creative skills in critical reading and writing
  • To mould self-confident individuals capable of pursuing related careers in a challenging environment

SCOPE

  • The programme propels to equip the students with an in-depth knowledge of the English Language and Literature.
  • Develops critical thinking and analytical interpretations.
  • Promotes communicative skills to raise up to the challenges of the competitive career world.

DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2016 - 2017

  • The first of the Meeting of the PG Literary and Debating Association was held on 27.07.2016. Dr. Suja Mathew, Assistant Professor of English, NGM College, Pollachi, served as Chief Guest and spoke: Deep Ecology. On the same day, the theme of the year - African and African American Literature was introduced.
  • In this regard, a One day Literary Competition 'Kaine Quest' was conducted with the following competitions: Book Review, Literary Exhibition, Face Painting, One Act Play Writing, Pen a Poem, Humm a Poem, Short Story Writing, Literary Quiz, Enacting One Act Play, Literary Parade, and Literary Dance.
  • On 03.08.2016, BEC Workshop was organised on "Skills for Work". Ms. Padmaja Shivkumar from Cambridge English Language,Chennai served as the Resource person and 56 students have taken up Business English Certificate Course in this academic year.
  • On 29.08.2016, Elocution Club conducted Elocution Competition on "Challenges of Women in 21st Century" for all the disciplines.
  • On 02.09.2016, Dr. John Sekar J, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of English, American College, Madurai served as the Workshop Facilitator for A One Day Regional Workshop on "English Phonetics and Phonology".
  • A Two Days workshop on "Gift yourself A Dream Job" was organised on 15.12.2016 & 16.12.2016 for UG English Literature students. Mr. Kadamai Ravi, Director Speak Easy, Coimbatore served as the Resource Person.
  • An IN HOUSE BOOK titled "Literature for Competency" compiled and edited by the Department was released by the Principal, Rev.Sr.Dr. I Arockiarani on 06.02.2017.
  • From 06.02.2017 to 18.02.2017 Practical Teaching Training Programme was carried out by II M.A English Literature students for I Degree Course students.
  • A One Day Symposium on "Modern Literary Criticism" was organised on 15.02.2017 for the Postgraduate students. Dr. U. Sumathy, Associate Professor of English, Government Arts College, Coimbatore, spoke on Environmental Justice and Ms. C.G. Shyamala, Assistant Professor of English, Mercy College, Pallakad, Kerala, addressed on Cultural Studies: Theory & Praxis.
  • Two Guest Lectures by eminent resource persons were organized on the topics "Crisis in Orientalism" and "Literary Criticism – Romantic Revolt" respectively for the UG students.
  • Students of both UG and PG have won 3 State Level Intercollegiate Literary Meet and attended various Workshops and Seminars and presented papers as well.
  • Valedictory Function of the Association was held on 27.02.2017. The Chief Guest Mrs. Shobana Rajakumari, Associate Professor and Head, Providence College, Coonoor, spoke on "Music: An Integral Part of African Culture" and released the 11th Volume of the Department magazine "WINGS".
